Approaching Thorobred immediately inspires confidence.  She is perfectly cleaned and detailed, and she offers a very yacht feel with an oversized mast, deck hardware and abundant grab rails.

A large cockpit is accessed by side boarding.  Cockpit offers a custom, comfortable seat, that converts from an aft facing position to a forward facing position, but will also function as a lounge.  Access to the cabin is through a centerline double door which opens up into a bright and airy salon.  Side windows are large, fixed glazed panels, while the two aft and two forward window opens for ventilation, and of course dimmable, LED overhead lights.

The cabin is finished in a mahogany Herreshoff, with some fir hull ceilings below.   To port is a large settee, which is convertible for the occasional guests.  Opposite is the galley.  Storage is under the settee, below helm seats below the sink, and in a storage cabinet next to the galley.  The settee will also convert to a double for overnight guests.

The forward faced seating is set up perfectly for cruising.  They are raised for visibility and upholstered for comfort.   They will keep a captain and mate very comfortable while underway and serve as a great perch while on a mooring for taking in the views from the 360 degrees of windows in the cabin.  The helm is laid out perfectly for navigating, with all controls with-in arms reach, and even a upholder and "glove box."

The head and owners cabin is accessed through a centerline companionway.  Once at the bottom, to starboard is the main AC/DC distribution panel and controls, with a small settee.  Opporsite to port is a lit, ventilated head with a shower enclosed with a curtain.  Forward of the head is a hanging locker, alongside berth and storage.  The below area is attractively finished, and bright and airy with opening ports and hatches.

The entire exterior is finished in Awlgrip for ease of care and long term preservation.   The exterior teak is finished in high gloss and is in an intact and very attractive.

The thoughtful layout, finish and condition make Thorobred an excellent choice for a cruising yacht.

Hull & Deck

  • own East Cruiser - Lobster Boat Design
  • Designed by Jaime Lowell
  • Built by Lowell Brothers - Completion in June 2012
  • Full Keel, Rounded Chine, Single-Screw, Semi-Displacement
  • Cored Fiberglass Hull construction - use of 1" "CoreCell" A500 core material, vinyl ester resin with 1603, 1708 and 1808 knit fabrics along with 18oz double biaxial carbon fibre material on the inside.
  • Forward portions of the hull and the keel structure built without the use of coring materials in order to obtain greater strength in those areas.
  • Keel structure has three additional layers of 2415 by 090.  Coring stops at the inside "turn of the bilge", which is approximately one foot either side of the vessel's centerline
  • Carbon Fibre on the "house" (superstructure) with the use of 1.5" Curit "Corecell" structural core material
  • Portions of the foredeck received substantial strengthening with the removal of the "Corecell" material and the substitution of the "Penske Board" (24 density) in way of mooring cleat bases, windlass base, etc.  In addition, several layers of "glass" and 2414 fabric were both on the top and the bottom of the casting.
  • Hull "Sheer" area received several additional applications of 1708 fabric and vinyl ester resin to strengthen the upper portions of the hull structure where heavy loading may occur.
  • The aft end of the "house' structure supports a well-gathered NAUTILUS electronics "tree" (mast) constructed of G10 fiberglass epoxy resin laminate, which has been constructed by soaking layers of glass cloth in the resin, then compressed and heated into the desired shape.
  • Deck structure is fitted with three hatches, six opening port lights, ten non-opening port lights and a non-skid surface in weather deck traffic areas.
  • Bottom sanded and re-painted in 2016
